As temperatures drop and winter weather approaches, it’s essential for drivers to be aware of the latest regulations regarding winter tires in Germany. Key Changes to the Rules
Mandatory Use Period
Under the new regulations, the mandatory period for using winter tires will remain from October 1st to April 15th. However, it will also emphasize the necessity of adapting to actual weather conditions. Drivers are encouraged to switch to winter tires as soon as the temperature drops consistently below 7°C, irrespective of the calendar date.
New Tread Depth Requirements
One of the critical changes is the enforcement of stricter tread depth requirements. The minimum tread depth for winter tires will be 4 mm, an increase from the previous 3 mm. This change aims to improve safety features and reduce the number of accidents caused by insufficient tire performance in winter conditions.
Winter Tire Labeling and Certification
To facilitate the selection of appropriate winter tires, all new winter tires sold in Germany must feature a clear labeling system. Tires will be marked with a snowflake symbol on the mountain (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake, or 3PMSF) to signify that they meet the rigorous performance standards for winter conditions. By 2024, only tires with this certification will be deemed suitable for winter use, effectively phasing out any non-compliant products.
Penalties for Non-compliance
To enforce these rules, the government will implement stricter penalties for drivers who fail to comply. Fines will be levied on those who drive without appropriate winter tires in the designated period or who are found using tires that do not meet the new tread depth and certification requirements. The fines are intended to encourage compliance and enhance road safety.
If you are in breach of the law, not only the owner but also the driver will be fined. The fine for the driver is from 60€ up to 120 € and 1 point in the German driving ability register FAER, depending on the type of the offence. The fine for the owner is 75 € and 1 point in the registry.
If you do not use appropriate tires: You might encounter problems with your insurance company in case of an accident caused by a third person or by your fault.
